INSIDE SCOOP - THE DRAFT
Well the draft has come and gone. And also gone are Kordell Stewart and Eddie George. We already knew that the Silverbacks were expecting a change this year, but not that! At any rate, the 'Backs accomplished their task of solidifying the backfield, by picking up Ricky Watters and Adrian Murrell. However that came at a cost. At the moment, no serious quarterback numbers are expected from either Jeff Blake or Ty Detmer, the two quarterbacks the 'Backs picked up originally to back up Kordell Stewart, but now turns out will have to replace him. The upside is that these two QBs start. The bad news is between the two of them they have maybe 2 or 3 solid receivers to throw to. | |
The good news is that Brian Griese is now a Silverback. While
not expected to get much clock this year with Bubby Brister behind the center in Denver,
he Broncos think he is Elway's heir apparent. If he starts even next year, he could
be dangerous. You'd think that with as many talented receivers are avaiable the Silverbacks would have gotten some. As it is, the 'Backs were looking to save money in hopes of keeping Stewart, albeit by paying free agent money. As such the only bonafide receiver is Terrell Owens, and possibly Jerome Pathon or Sean Dawkins both of which work behind All-Stars, Marvin Harrison and Joey Galloway respectively. |

The other receivers are cheap because they are untested. David Boston, the rookie who is expected to start for the Arizona Cardinals, and none other than Yatil Green of Miami. Why would the 'Backs venture with Green? Rumor has it in Miami that he can still maintain his skills even after 2 major knee surgeries. Training camp will be watched VERY closely.
Two other notables, David LaFleur the TE for Dallas will be a quality backup to Ben Coates. And kicker Wade Richey of San Franscisco may boot a lot of points if the 49ers can maintain status quo. Finally the defenses Baltimore and New York Jets. With the Jets playing in such a high powered division and the Ravens playing in a lesser scoring division, the Silverbacks may look to go with the Ravens defense a little more often than the Jets. But time will tell.

Game On
Well, the pre-season is here and in full swing. How do things look for the 'Backs? Not as bad as Coach Waldo originally thought. The quarterback situation is still a major point of concern, however, it seems Jeff Blake is seemingly a safe starter for this season because rookie Akili Smith has yet to be signed and not very likely to sign anytime soon. Plus, Mr. Blake has been playing very well in pre-season. Ty Detmer on the other hand has been rather inconsistent. It is very apparent that he is only a band-aid until the real deal, Tim Couch, is knighted as quarterback.
Running Back is more stable, which is really what the Silverbacks really wanted. With Ricky Watters, Adrian Murrell, and Napoleon Kaufmann shoring up the backfield there is no room or need for Tyrone Wheatley. The jury is still out on the receiving corps. Terrell Owens is the only sure thing. After that, Sean Dawkins may be the number 2, with David Boston in the hole. However, Jerome Pathon and Yatil Green are expected to get a lot more time. If Green can stay healthy AND if he can maintain the form he had before the two surgeries, he may have a impact on the Dolphin offense. He's had some good things happen in training camp, but game performance may be iffy. Tight Ends are a lock with Ben Coates, and David LaFluer at backup.
That leaves the kicking game and defense. Both of which are still undecided. If the Silverbacks were to decide today, the Baltimore Raven will probably be the first choice defense, while Wade Richey would be the most likely kicker.
Pre-season ends in 2 weeks. We shall all find out then.
